Michelle Miles, the visionary founder of the Sustainable Wedding Alliance, who’s leading a transformation in the wedding industry towards sustainability and they’re paving the way for eco-conscious weddings.
Michelle Miles founded the Sustainable Wedding Alliance in 2020 with a vision to drive sustainable change in the wedding industry. Through education, support and accreditation, the Sustainable Wedding Alliance is helping wedding businesses build a sustainable future.
Miles was inspired to start the business after seeing couples struggle to find sustainable wedding suppliers. “Experience of working with couples directly means that we know that they wish they had a greater choice when it comes to sustainable (and ethical) suppliers,” she says. “
As people become increasingly aware of climate change, and start to understand what their impact on the environment truly is, I know this want, that clients have, will soon turn to a need.”
But Miles knows it’s not just about meeting consumer demand. As business owners, “we all need to take a look at the way we run both our businesses and the events and weddings we produce,” she says. “For many it’s a daunting task, but it doesn’t need to be.
Sustainability isn’t just about just making a few simple changes, it’s about adapting the way your business works, understanding the relationship between your business and our planet and balancing the two.”
To date, the Sustainable Wedding Alliance’s biggest achievement has been supporting businesses to achieve their Sustainable Wedding Alliance Accreditation.
Looking ahead, Miles plans to continue working with businesses to drive change, educate wedding professionals and encourage sustainable behaviours in couples.
As finalists in the Great British Entrepreneur Awards 2023, Miles and the Sustainable Wedding Alliance are being recognised for their vision and important work. The Awards, known as “The Grammys of Entrepreneurship,” take place in London on November 20th.
