Peter Briffett and Portman Wills were strangers when a mutual friend introduced them over an article about Walmart exploring flexible pay options for employees.
Recognising the opportunity to leverage cloud technology and workplace data to get pay into the hands of workers when they need it, Briffett and Wills founded Wagestream in 2018.
Wagestream partners with major employers like Asda, Next, Pizza Express, and the NHS to offer fair financial services built around pay to over 3 million frontline workers. The company has helped hundreds of thousands avoid debt cycles and enabled over 300,000 to save for the first time.
“Our message was clear from the beginning: we wanted to help frontline workers and stop predatory financial services providers preying on them,” says Briffett.
Now the world’s fastest-growing social impact fintech, Wagestream proves that inclusive, transformative services can scale sustainably. A recent $175M funding round, the largest for a social impact financial services provider, fuels Wagestream’s mission to represent unfairly treated workers at the highest levels of research and government.
Now in partnership with the Money and Pensions Service, Wagestream is piloting an auto-save program for low- to middle-income workers. Early results show over 50% higher participation, impressive given many have never saved before. “Wagestream’s growth isn’t just impressive. It’s legacy-building,” says Wills.
